Dusty Crum, the owner of Wildman's Pizza, Pasta and Pythons, has implemented a rather unusual currency system: accepting invasive Burmese pythons in exchange for free pizza.

By offering a free pizza for every python caught, Crum is incentivizing locals, especially the younger generation, to participate in this conservation effort.

The Burmese python, native to Southeast Asia, has become a significant threat to the delicate ecosystem of the Everglades. With few natural predators and a high reproductive rate, these snakes have established a thriving population in Florida. Their aggressive predation on native wildlife disrupts the natural balance, impacting species like panthers, raptors, and bobcats.
"These pythons are a real menace," says Jason Schultz, a spokesperson for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. "They threaten the very foundation of our unique Everglades ecosystem."
The Florida Python Challenge, organized by the FWCC and the South Florida Water Management District, aims to reduce the python population through a combination of education and incentives. Participants undergo training to learn how to ethically hunt and kill these invasive snakes, with cash prizes offered to those who bring in the most carcasses.
Crum, an avid hunter himself, is a regular participant in the challenge. He describes the hunt as a challenging endeavor, requiring patience and a keen eye. "Snakin' ain't easy," he says. "It's like finding a needle in a haystack, but with a twist."
In addition to his pizza business, Crum also sells python-related products, from snake-skin jewelry to actual snake oil. He even offers a unique culinary experience by serving python pizza, topped with sautéed python meat.
"It's a gamey flavor, but it's good," Crum assures. "It's a conversation starter, for sure."
While python pizza may not be for everyone, Crum's innovative approach to conservation and business has certainly caught the attention of many. His restaurant has become a hub for python hunters, a place to share stories, strategies, and, of course, enjoy a good pizza.
"Wildman's is more than just a pizzeria," Crum says. "It's a community gathering place, a hub for conservation efforts, and a unique dining experience."
